This book is the first of eleven in a manga series revolving around the Legend of Zelda storyline, where the main character, Link, a farmer boy who comes to realise he has the favour of the goddess, encounters a goblin-like sprite that saves his life and informs him about the Twilight Realm. This mirror dimension of the kingdom was formed to keep evil sorcerers away from what would from then on be deemed “The World of Light”. A descendant of one of these sorcerers had usurped the throne of the Twilight Realm and formed a plot to invade the World of Light. Link is forced to understand his new role; having been thrust from his life as a farmer, he transforms into a beast when the world turns upside down.

I most enjoyed the heavier themes found in this book, while whimsy and the Legend of Zelda storyline are still kept flawlessly. Despite tackling new topics in a more mature way than in the game on which it is based, the manga doesn’t struggle at all to juggle a more mature audience with its childish theme. Despite condensing an entire game into one manga, the reader is still met with a sense of adventure and wonder as they learn about the story alongside the protagonist. For its tactful creativity to set up the following plot without dragging on details, I would award a full 5 out of 5 stars.
