Leif is named after a valiant Viking. But being a two-foot nothing, fraidy-cat kid with a thousand and one phobias is about as far from valiant as you can get. He's a Certified Science Enthusiast and has a brain as large and mysterious as the universe. He's not one of the cool kids at school. Or the geeks. He's not even one of the misfits. (Have you ever heard of a misfit who didn't fit…

My Tiny Universe is a middle-grade novel focused on an 11-year-old boy named Leif. The novel follows Leif as he goes on a quest to find a friend. Leif thinks differently from others and finds it challenging to make connections; he declares himself “not quite a cool kid but not one of the geeks.” This story takes place in our world but fast-forward 100 or so years. It is a confronting novel with just the right amount of humour.

I rated this book four out of five stars, which I found surprising as I don’t usually read, or genuinely enjoy reading, middle grade fiction. The character Leif was really relatable. I found comfort in the fact that he didn’t know what to say to anyone ever. He was also funny in the most indescribable way. My only point of criticism is that the Gen Z slang felt very forced. I found myself cringing A LOT. I feel like writers should focus on the language that feels right rather than the newest slang.
