Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites. The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society. Powerless is set in a fantasy world, where in the main city, Ilya, there are people with abilities/powers who are called elites, and people without them called ordinaries. The main protagonist, Paedyn, is an ordinary. She is a poor teen living in ‘the slums’ with her best friend. When she saves a prince’s life, she is chosen to participate in a deadly game. The plot features Paedyn surviving as a lesser-than, and fighting the feelings she has for the prince.

I enjoyed the detailed world setting, and that you can easily immerse yourself in the world of the book, and the slow-burn romance within it. I love how each character has their own unique voice, and how the author conveys their emotions throughout the book. If you love dark, slow-burn romantasy books with high stakes, this is the book for you. Trust me.
