Maddy is mute. Since the Incident she has barely spoken. And now she and her mother and brother are staying in a farmhouse on an old apricot orchard not far from town. It’s a chance to rest and recuperate – or a way to hide further away from the world. Alice is waiting. Since Birdy, her darling daughter, disappeared forty-five years ago, she has sat in her house waiting for her to come home. Alice…

Birdy, written by Sharon Kernot, is a simple book. It explores what social media can do to people’s lives. The book is about a girl called Maddy who is mostly mute after the ‘incident’. She travels out to an old farmhouse out of town where she goes on her journey to relearn how to speak again by developing a friendship with a woman who lost her daughter. This is where she learns who Birdy was. The themes revealed throughout the book include resilience, effects of social media, friendship, and family bonds. This was an interesting book, although it was slightly slow to get into. Overall, this was a great quick read.
